Situated roughly at the midpoint of Virginia's stunningly beautiful Skyline Drive, Big Meadows can be a great place to stay if you're lucky enough to catch it on a good day.
On one of those good days, you can pitch your tent or park your RV along the edge of a north-facing ridgeline ... and then settle in and enjoy the views of distant valleys and mountains. Later, you can take a quiet walk and observe the large deer herd that lives in and around the campground. Or you can hike to any of three waterfalls within walking distance.
On a quiet day, Big Meadows provides campsites with spectacular scenery.
Alas, Big Meadows is only a two-hour drive from the Washington, D.C., region, and it tends to fill to overflowing on weekends and holidays. Those crowds bring with them noisy generators, smoky fires, loud radios and all the other annoyances that come with too many campers in too small of a space.
And, while the campground's sites are spacious and shaded by big trees, there is little understory screening between sites. So noise can really rattle around the place.
Bottom line? This is nice place to spend a midweek, off-season evening. And it can be okay even on a weekend if you're traveling with an RV. Tenters, though, might want to look elsewhere, especially on a summer or early autumn weekend.
