| Skiing has a long history in the hills along the Maine coast. Today, only the Camden Snow Bowl on Ragged Mountain survives among the dozens of coastal region hills that once provided lift-serviced skiing.
This gives the Snow Bowl the unique distinction in the U.S. as the only ski area where skiers and riders can enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. And yes, it's quite a view, as the ocean is only a couple of miles distant.
Alas, the seaside location is a curse more often than not.Coastal Maine often suffers through cold rain when it's snowing everywhere else in the state. And even when it's clear and cold elsewhere, the warming effects of the ocean put a damper early-season snowmaking at the Snow Bowl.
Years ago the Snow Bowl subsisted on natural snow. Back then, there wasn't much skiing some years. Today the town-owned area blows snow on half of its 10 trails, assuring local skiing for coastal Mainers even during those years when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate. The most interesting skiing -- and the best views -- have to wait for those days when the snow gods bless the Maine coast. Even then, this is a tame mountain where casual skiers will feel comfortable on all 10 trails -- and where they'll enjoy unique and charming views. |
